"Cinque Terre" means Five Lands. It is essentially an area along the Northern Italian coast that is home to 5 ancient cities. The original settlers here were left undisturbed by the Romans in return for cultivating the olive vineyards that grow along the hillsides here. Each of the cities is situated either on a promontory that juts out into the sea or in a sharp inlet where the city is protected from the sea. The area is know for its pesto (truly magnifico!) and its high-quality olive oil. However, the people that live here and walk along the steep paths to get from town to town are idiots!
